Checkers ramps up innovation | K-beauty now at Clicks

A shortish Tatler for a shortish week, and as always, we’re here to deliver it straight to your inbox. Overall, it’s been a light news week, with stories from Checkers re. some interesting collabs, as well as a story from Woolies, which was the subject of a PhD study. News that wasn’t so light, however, was that regarding the PIC and Daybreak Foods, with the former essentially throwing in the towel and looking for another investor to save the embattled poultry business. And then, where in the world is your Kit Kat? Turns out Nestlé doesn’t know either, but hopefully, for the sake of a truck driver out there somewhere, the answer will be forthcoming. Enjoy the read.

Checkers

I’m green, da-ba-dee-da-ba-di

Pop quiz: And no cheating with your favourite AI… which well-known South African soft drink’s colours best complement the colour teal? Anyone? Sparletta Crème Soda’s, that’s whose, with its soft, pastel green packaging. So really, it was only a matter of time before one of South Africa’s favourite fizzy drinks would team up with The Teal Titan of South African FMCG, Checkers. The duo joined forces to bring us a limited‑edition, co‑branded collector’s “can you can’t buy”, which from 1 to 6 April was delivered to lucky Sixty60 shoppers. Sixty60 makes frequent use of what it calls its ‘surprise-and-delight’ model, popping bespoke branded products into its shopping bags around special occasions.

Still with Checkers, it has launched another ‘store-within-a-store’, this time at its Checkers Hyper in Centurion Mall. And the brand in question is none other than Nespresso. The Nespresso shop-in-shop offers Hyper shoppers a full range of Nespresso capsules and pods, machines and accessories. “Expanding accessibility is one of the key levers to unlock the full potential of the coffee capsules category,” says Gabriel Nobre, CEO of Nespresso South Africa. “Through our partnership with Checkers, we are accelerating this ambition with a true omnichannel approach.” Western Cape shoppers will be pleased to know that a second Nespresso shop-in-shop is set to open at the Checkers Hyper Paarl Junction soon.

And this just in, Sixty60 now has a Smart AI shopping assistant by the name of… Pixie! Developed entirely in-house by ShopriteX, Pixie predicts what individual customers need and when. The experimental service will start rolling out on the app today (9 April). We’ll bring you more news on this next week, but in the meantime, have a look at the video here.

Ti Perspective: Always the innovator, this Checkers, nê? We can’t wait to see what’s next.

Woolworths

That’s Dr Woolworths to you

Here’s an interesting one… our very own Woolies has been the subject of a four‑year PhD study coming out of Coventry University in the UK. Conducted by Sustainable Food Systems Researcher Catherine Mazhandu, the research has found that the Farming for the Future programme – running now for 17 years – is indeed helping farmers in real and tangible ways. How so? By improving soil health, water efficiency, biodiversity and the resilience of the fresh-produce farms within the programme, supporting “climate-smart” agriculture and ensuring long-term supply security. This is the first independent academic review globally to evaluate a retailer-led sustainability programme, analysing 16 years of data from Woolworths’ Top 30 suppliers to assess environmental performance. “What makes this research especially important is that Woolworths opened the programme up to full independent scrutiny – something retailers almost never do,” said a grateful Mazhandu. “Our analysis shows steady, meaningful improvements that really matter on the ground”.

Ti Perspective: A fantastic feather in the cap for Woolworths, and some invaluable findings for other corporates and public authorities looking to address climate and sustainability challenges in our food systems. Not to mention the fact that it proves, yet again, that our proudly South African retailers are among the most progressive in the world.

K-beauty

You’re my soda pop

In case you’d missed it, K-beauty is well and truly a thing, that skincare philosophy from South Korea that is taking the beauty world by storm. We intentionally use the word philosophy here because K-beauty stands for more than just its skincare products – unlike more mainstream, ‘Western’ brands, K-beauty is not about fixing a skin problem by stripping, covering or hiding it, but rather preventing it from occurring in the first place through nourishment and maintaining the skin’s natural balance. A quick look online shows us that there are many niche e-tailers with dedicated K-beauty ranges in SA, but among our major retailers, Clicks has taken the lead, with various brands now available both online and in-store. And internationally, big guys like Target, Walmart and Amazon have extensive offerings too.

Ti Perspective: Keep your eyes peeled [see what we did there?] for this trend. We’re pretty sure it’s going to show up more and more in our other majors soon. MANUFACTURERS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS

Daybreak Foods

Tough break

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) – the entity that manages the pension funds of SA’s government workers by investing on their behalf – is looking for a partner to buy 60% of its wholly owned chicken business, Daybreak Foods. Since buying the successful poultry business in 2015, Daybreak has been plagued with a range of troubles, including financial, governance and mismanagement scandals, resulting in it being placed under business rescue in mid-2025. The only way for the business to be saved at this point is for the PIC to let go of its majority by finding a partner to stabilise the business, preferably one which knows poultry through and through. And make no mistake, much like Tongaat Hullet, this business must be saved to safeguard not only thousands of jobs, but also SA’s chicken supply, as it holds about 7% of SA’s chicken market. So far, the PIC has already injected more than R1.7bn into the business and cannot afford to invest any more.

Ti Perspective: With so many, many variables constantly affecting it, the poultry industry is a tough gig that even the biggest listed companies must treat with the utmost respect. Daybreak is going to be quite something to mop up… fingers crossed a deal materialises soon.

Nestlé

The Italian Job

Now this story tickled our funny bone, while also stirring a tiny bit of cynicism in us. Somewhere between Italy and Poland, a whole truck carrying 400,000 Kit Kat bars disappeared. Yup, just like that…. poof! Truck and Kit Kats all gone, and still no sign of them. Now the news first broke on 1 April, so everyone’s initial reaction was “this is a joke, right?” After all, who in their right mind would want to steal 12 tonnes of crispy chocolate deliciousness? But Nestlé has assured us that a joke it is not, and understandably, the manufacturer is rather keen to locate the missing bars. Where to begin? Well, Nestlé’s super sleuths opted to ask those in whose hands the Kit Kats may have landed, i.e. the general public. And to help us help them, they developed a “Stolen KitKat Tracker” where consumers can plug in the eight-digit batch code on the pack they’ve bought to see if it comes from the stolen loot. Pretty wild, wouldn’t you say? But it gets better. Now the saga has been turned into a viral communications campaign, with memes of all kinds flooding the socials – not only from Nestlé, but other businesses too, which are either commiserating or taking the mickey out of the whole situation. You can read some of the best ones here, including one from Pizza Hut South Africa.

Ti Perspective: See why we’re finding it hard to believe that this isn’t just an April Fool’s that’s being stretched beyond the 12 noon cut-off? But, there’s another, really concerning, part of this story that no one is talking about. Where the bleeding heck is that truck driver? Has he been kidnapped? Or was he in on the heist? We have so many questions…

The Economy

Looking back, while we ‘wait and see’

The oil price changes almost hourly, and uncertainty is extreme. So let’s take a look back at what we do know… last month’s economic data:

    • Interest rate: The Monetary Policy Committee unanimously agreed that the interest rate remain unchanged and the outlook is heavily reliant on how high the oil price goes, and how long it stays that way
    • Inflation: The index landed on target (3%) in Feb 2026. It will tick up a bit in the March release, then jump up in the April release as the fuel price hike kicks in
    • Real retail sales growth started the year strong at +4.2% YoY in Jan 2026. It was another solid month of real growth for retailers in household goods: +10.7%, supported by the interest rate cuts, some improvement in consumer confidence, and price movement (towards lower average selling prices). General dealers (predominantly selling food) saw real growth only +1.7% YoY off a high base (i.e Jan 2025: +7.5% growth) but food specialists (the likes of smaller stores like bakeries, butcheries, fruit & veg that sell a specific type of food rather than a general assortment) reported a decline (-6.3%), marking declines for nine of the last 12 months. This was also off a high base (i.e. Jan 2025: +7.7%)
    • Both business and consumer confidence ticked up in Q1/2026, measured by FNB/BER. The surveys for both indices were completed around mid-Feb 2026 and reflected the optimism felt at the time

Ti Perspective: While Q1 delivered a solid performance, the extreme global uncertainty has clouded the outlook for Q2, forcing a shift from optimism to ‘wait and see’.
