(CEO of The SPAR Group Limited)
The SPAR Group Limited is a South African company listed on the JSE Limited and licensed by SPAR International to operate in selected African countries. The Group operates according to the principle of voluntary trading through the SPAR and Build it Guilds, offering independence and flexibility and describes itself as a wholesaler and distributor of goods and services to independently-owned SPAR, Build it and Tops at SPAR retail stores.
SPAR South Africa was established in 1963 as part of WG Brown and its head office is in KwaZulu-Natal. In 1988 SPAR became a wholly-owned Tiger Brands subsidiary, but was unbundled and separately listed on the JSE in October 2004.
The SPAR Group, headed by CEO Graham O’Connor, has a balanced portfolio of over 1,900 member stores across eight trading brands, supplied through and supported by seven distribution centres (including imports). These eight trading brands stretch across grocery, fresh produce, liquor, pharmaceuticals and building material. The SPAR member model provides the platform for a trading brand which is attractive to shoppers from LSM 1 through to LSM 10.
In 2015, the SPAR Group South Africa acquired an 80% stake in the BWG Group which holds the SPAR license in Ireland and operates other brands across Ireland and South West England, and more recently a 60% acquisition of SPAR Switzerland. The SPAR Group South Africa is now the second largest retailer by turnover in South Africa (measured as member sales out).
